Bugs Bunny broke the news. Not the cartoon, but this wonderful plastic transistor radio shaped like the silly rabbit. No trick for this kid. That radio worked. For ball games. Bee Gees songs, maybe a Gerald Ford comment here and there — whatever was happening in 1975, when I was 6 years old, living in Indianola, Iowa.
Wow, that was compelling. Your writing just carried me along through the years. I have long admired the works of the Wilson/Burns family as they chronicled the events of Carroll, Iowa over the decades. I fear we have lost a big part of our memory and point of reference, Thank you for the wonderful years of service to our community.
I’m glad that this venue is available to follow your thoughts and writings.
Amazing tribute to Ann and an amazing walk through your family life. sharing the world events that intertwined with your lives was an amazing framing for the story.
Thank you Doug for your insightful and thought provoking article. I was deeply touched and moved by the sharing of your mom's insight, and honesty. We lived in Caroll 1983 -1989 and I remember conversations with your mother about a variety of things on which we found ourselves in agreement. She was and is a strong woman who stands for what is right in life and relationships. I continue to adire and respect her. She raised you right and I have continued to follow your cararee from a distance with continued appreciation. Thank you for sharing a very moving tribute to your other.
Doug, I enjoyed learning more about your mother and your family. Owning a family newspaper remains a challenge for every day but it is an enjoyable challenge.
Congratulations, Doug, on the best story you've ever written. I've known three generations of the Wilson-Burns family, and decades from now they are going to be remembered right along with the Neus, the Farners and the others who made Carroll IA one of the strongest small towns in America. This story does three things: 1) It connects the historical dots we've known & wondered about in one family of top Iowa journalists, 2) it makes clear what a remarkable community newspaper the Carroll Times Herald has been, and 3) it is the best Mother's Day card I've ever seen.
Wow what a well written an awesome article Doug. Your Mom is so proud of you and did such a great job in raising you three. You all should be so proud.
10 walks in a lifetime with my progressive mom
