The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, is hosting American Economic Revitalization: A Conversation With Congressman Ro Khanna at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center auditorium. The event will feature a public conversation with Silicon Valley Congressman Ro Khanna, a national leader on economic revitalization, and Douglas Burns, veteran Iowa community journalist and co-owner of Carroll-based Herald Publishing Co.
Congressman Ro Khanna and Douglas Burns will discuss The New Economic Patriotism, covering topics ranging from revitalizing left-behind regions in the technology space, bringing overseas jobs back to the United States, and incentivizing an equitable spread of technology centers across the nation.
Congressman Khanna is active in helping to assist rural regions around the nation connect with Silicon Valley for career and economic development. The congressman recently authored “Dignity In a Digital Age,” a book featuring a revolutionary roadmap to addressing the nation’s digital divide and offering greater economic prosperity to all.
“We haven’t prioritized the stuff that built this country, and it is infuriating,” Congressman Khanna states. “I think there is an anger. My view is we should have a new economic patriotism and start talking about re-industrializing America with good union jobs, and I actually think that could start bringing this country together, parts of it. We have to make stuff in America again.”
Burns is a fourth-generation Iowa journalist.

Doug: I will be on travel, but the issue I faced is that non-urban areas of the state hear a constant droning of Sinclair and Fox...against which any progressive cause or even factual history of legislation that served the best interests of rural America is lost. Our messaging and outreach are horrible and not getting better.
