How does artificial intelligence weigh in on vexing and long unanswerable questions?

The robot is on my mind — or in my head. I’ll go back to relying on old-school, flesh-and-blood writing and reporting in the next Iowa Mercury posts, but the lure of the bot is strong. So I posed more queries and commands to the HAL of Our Times — ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence bot with rapidly advancing algorithms fed by never-ended mines of data. Yes, I know, there is a touch of madness to this. If ChatGPT ever refers to me as Dave, instead of Doug, (as in “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” —— “2001 A Space Odyssey”), I’ll be looking for Rick Grimes in “The Walking Dead.”

What can ChatGPT tell me about a multitude of wide-ranging questions and matters swimming around in our oh-so-human brains? In this case, mine. From the practical to the macabre to the political, I put questions to the bot. ChatGPT scrolled out the answers in seconds.

Here is what ChatGPT has to say on an array of questions — some with a predictive goal in the query, others more analytical and some downright supercilious on my part (the only writing that is mine is the bolded questioning):

Where will the next mass shooting take place?

As an AI language model, I do not have the ability to predict future events or criminal activities. It is deeply concerning that mass shootings occur in our society, and it is important for all of us to work towards finding solutions that can help prevent such violent acts.

Would Henry Wallace of Iowa have dropped the atomic bombs on Japan to end World War II had he been president instead of Harry Truman?

Is heaven real?
