One thing worth noting: Ashley was a news reader. That is more of a performance job, i.e. portraying a believable journalist, than it is being an actual journalist. If she, Kari Lake and others of that ilk were actual journalists they would not have to complain about the so-called “left-wing news” they had to read. Rather, they would have delivered news stories they thought they needed to research, report and write — you know, stuff journalists do.
BTW, News anchors can do reporting if they want to be journalists. In eastern Iowa, I think of Dave Shay, Bruce Aune, Liz Mathis, Amy Johnson, Ron Steele, Maggie Jensen. I remember Beth Malicki going after the governor a few years ago on a story.
Hearing the words honesty, integrity, empathy, compassion, civility and decency in the rotunda was a refreshing experience, which has been demonstrated rarely over the past decade.
Although I’d imagine the millions of dollars A$hley was given to purchase a Senate seat, will also purchase the cleverest propaganda machine spin doctors money can buy.
Nobody has demonstrated more fealty and subservience to Trump’s claptrap than Hinson. She’s likely confident she’ll get the same Teflon treatment from the media as him.
The teachers have spoken up courageously to object. There was over 2,000 years of experience today saying to reject her. I believe Iowans should trust their judgment.
Thanks Doug for your report. Another example of how valuable Julie Gammack's Potlucks are to engaging Iowans. Last Monday's zoom gave me hope as does reading about the launch of Iowans for Decency. The teachers' letter was factual, explanatory and persuasive, well deserving of an A.
Doug, many thanks for this piece. Iowans For Decency is a resolute reckoning for what paucity of care that Rep. Ashley Hinson has shown and demonstrative inseparable alliance to the president no matter the cruelty and divisive rhetoric he announces.
Just wondering why the subtitle of this article reads "250 gather for Iowans For Decency rollout at State Capitol" and the reel clearly confirms around that many people present in the room, yet the first line of the story says "Dozens."
The "dozens" number refers to the teachers who signed the letter and otherwise were part of the program at the rally. The 250 includes these teachers but also others who were present -- many not teachers and independents and Republicans interested in learning more about Iowans For Decency -- as well as no doubt some people who were at the capitol in the morning and saw the rally and opted to attend. I probably could have been more clear about the distinction between the two numbers. I talked to a Republican woman who told me she is thinking about joining the organization. She was one of the 250 people but absorbed it and said nothing at the event.

Good question,

Thank you for this wonderful coverage.
Powerful. Thought provoking.
