Wow, great article, you really captured his special characteristics. I had the good fortune to go to the Philadelphia 76ers versus the Minnesota Timberwolves game in Des Moines six weeks ago. Denny went with me and he of course was there to see his special project Nick Nurse head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. He always likes seeing people do well. I think he knew half the people in the arena. He’s certainly one of the most colorful guys I ever met. I’m better off for having known Denny O’Grady.
Doug, you nailed it. You got it all. For 30 years, Denny O'Grady was the kind of sportswriter that most young sportswriters dream of becoming at some point in their lives. It was like that job in Carroll had been invented just for him. He was a perfect match for the newspaper, the owners, the schools in the area, the athletes & coaches, and the communities -- most of all, Carroll. The rest of us will be telling O'Grady stories for as long as we live. I'm so grateful I knew him.
Such a beautiful tribute to your friend, Doug. Your words make me wish I had known and loved this amazing human being. I also pretty much love your mother.
What a terrific tribute, Doug, and I loved hearing the comments about Ann and her relationship with this fine sports writer. You have shown what a wonderful leader she was- she loved her employees’ work and she loved her employees. A wonderful combo.
God work Doug
Thanks for sharing about your friend and his connection to your family.
Very nice tribute Doug, excellent writing. There was nothing like hearing Denny call a Track Meet at the Carroll Stadium. He loved his work.

A great story. Thanks. Denny was a great person to all he came in contact with.
Very nice tribute. I got to know Denny when I was the sports editor at the Des Moines Register. You describe his kindness so well.
