A few thought-provoking quotes from Sand, particularly about judging our neighbors because of the terrible things Trump does. I’m certainly guilty of that. I would happily be judged by the worst things Biden ever did compared to the litany of awful things Trump does, but I like the political message behinds Sand’s comment. Others will, too.

In interest I applied for a Project 2025 position. There were many questions that sought to determine my political persuasion. One question was: Name two politicians you most admire. My two: Robert Ray and Tom Harkin. Lastly, I never attached my resume for the Project 2025 crew despite a number of emails from the Project recruiter. I was a more curious versus serious applicant. A recovering Republican, recovering Democrat and resilient Independent could not offer the fealtly required by Trump and Project 2025 promoters.

Great coverage as always, Doug. I hope the unifying message sticks. The economy needs it.

Imagine how just telling people truths without fear of repercussions, stated with honesty and coherence excites and encourages them. Rob Sand is appealing to the better instincts and common sense of so many who hardly recognize those qualities in elected officials anymore. He’s offering hope through intellect and integrity, not grievance and derision. We can only work to ensure he and the message carried is not trammeled by the usual disinformation and twisted narrative of our opponents.

Hopefully his message of working for the common good resonates against the tsunami of hate for our fellow Iowans we've been enduring from the other side.

As I'm sure others have been wondering, how long can this go on? Kudos to Sand for his campaign.

Thanks for reporting on this. I attended the event and was impressed with Sand's messages and his ability to state things clearly in a manner that makes listeners nod their heads in approval. It was great to hear that he values natural resources and outdoor recreation, and understands it is unacceptable that Iowa ranks 49th (or so) in providing public places for its citizens to enjoy.

Yet another great article, Doug. Sands makes some good points. Like Nik, I, too, hope his message of working together/uniting sticks.

Wow, I don't think I ever would've heard the names Harkin and Sand in the same sentence. With respect, let's just be sure we're not diluting Harkin's historically populist politics in our excitement over having a viable candidate for governor.

I hope Sand, and other Democrats, will talk about CARE GIVERS in their campaigns. Democrats are missing a huge workforce sector, and potential voting bloc, when they don't talk publicly about the need for better pay for care givers. The public should be alerted to this need, AND care givers should hear themselves mentioned by candidates. They are potential Democratic voters. Care giver pay is a labor issue -- one that should be close to the hearts of Democrats. Say their name! Say their name!
