Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Nik Heftman and The Iowa Mercury’s Douglas Burns joined forces for the third installment of a live video cast (you can watch the recording here) this afternoon.
We delved into Nik’s observations on Telsa, how he went from enthusiast to a decision not to drive the vehicle produced by Elon Musk’s company.
Nik asked Doug about Minnesota governor and former Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s town hall in a packed Roosevelt High School auditorium Friday afternoon. Burns covered the event.
Dedicated independent film producers themselves and movie enthusiasts, Burns and Heftman saw the Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Picture “I’m Still Here,” a Brazilian film by Walter Salles starring Fernanda Torres. Two “must-see” ratings emerged from Nik and Doug who agreed Torres should have taken the Oscar for best actress for her role as the grieving and resolute wife of a former congressman “disappeared” by the military dictatorship of Brazil in the early 1970s.
Doug interviewed Nik about his Iowa origin story, and development of a career in journalism and the production of the feature-length documentary film “The Negro Artist” on spoken-word poet Caleb Rainey.
Doug’s TOP recommendation for the week: subscribe to and read author and journalist Beth Macy’s new Substack. Macy is the author of “Dopesick,” which was made into a Hulu series. Macy is an insightful author who writes with urgency on rural issues. Burns recently had an opportunity to talk with Macy in southern Virginia at an event on rural America.
