This is probably one of the biggest political stories of this cycle, Doug. Glad (and not surprised) that you jumped on it with this insightful column.

Nasty little bunch you got here , Burns. I’d party with Trump. Can’t say the same for these bores. Pence saves the country at the risk of his own life and we get these mean little gripes.

Tim Alberta, in "The Atlantic" (November 2022) wrote, "For decades, Pence has introduced himself to audiences in the same way: “I’m a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican. In that order.”

Given the above, what is shocking is his rationale for not endorsing Trump (as reported) is based solely on policy differences.

(Alberta's "The Kingdom, The Power, and The Glory" (2023) is a wonderful read, well-researched and written!)

Mike Pence may be a swell guy, but he's a lying weasel to suit his political purposes. Re: Trump , "the greatest honor of my life" puke. Then the following string of lies about the military, the economy and standing with friends and against enemies. "As congenital liar Trump defined them on his whim of the day," he should have added. Pence s right about appointing tons o' "conservative" judges, and they're screwing up the honest rule of law in America daily. I don't think much of Pence. And please interpret the last statement both ways. Bill McGee

When you asked Pence if Trump were a "transactional conservative," someone with confidence in what he knows and doesn't know would have asked you to explain. All his career, Pence has used the words and thoughts of other people to define his own "breadth" of knowledge. I think even the most conservative of voters can see how he struggles with ideas and with a facile way of expressing those ideas. HIs major talent is that he "cleans up good." I like the guy, but he plays better in Indiana, where everyone knows the Pence family.
