Great article. I watched some of this series and felt very queasy, now I understand why.

Again I am clueless about an overpriced cable TV series. Another reason to subscribe to Iowa Collaborative writers.

I watched the entire ramshackle Part 2 of the fifth season. It was as insane as you lay it out to be. I honestly think it's as much of a commentary against the point of view of John Dutton considering how much his family has been and is torn apart by his desire to hold onto what he has. John has killed so many times for his land and it finally caught up with him, and in the end the surviving kids give it up to the people who used to own it. It was all imperfectly executed, of course, but that happens.

All that said, I can absolutely understand your point of view as an adopted child toward how Jaime was portrayed. To be honest, this was one of many things that made no sense except in Taylor Sheridan's head. Jaime was one of the most dumped on characters in the series (Kayce Dutton and his family a close second).

I thought your idea about making Beth the adopted Dutton actually would have been an improvement. I'd also add I would have like to have seen Jaime finally decide he's done with the family drama and go off on his own with his own family to build a new existence.

Best of luck with the Iowa Mercury from a now-retired Iowa journo.
